In the second paper of this two part series on Key Elements of Interprofessional Education (IPE), we highlight factors for success in IPE based on a systematic literature review conducted for Health Canada in its Interprofessional Education for Patient Centred Practice initiative in Canada (Oandasan et al., 2004). The paper initially discusses micro (individual level) meso (institutional/organizational level) and macro (socio-cultural and political level) factors that can influence the success of an IPE initiative. The discussion provides the infrastructure for the introduction of a proposed framework for educators to utilize in the planning and implementation of an IPE program to enhance a learner's opportunity to become a collaborative practitioner. The paper also discusses key issues related to the evaluation of IPE and its varied outcomes. Lastly, it gives the reader suggestions of outcome measurements that can be used within the proposed IPE framework.

Throughout the history of the water treatment industry, the need for technology has steadily grown in proportion to the need for safe water. This has been an ongoing process to ensure that products are top of the line, incorporating advancements that research and science have fostered. Many stories WC&P International has published about manufacturers and dealers have traced that progress, from modest beginnings in the basement or garage to the production facility. In the past decade or two, though, the emphasis on post-high school education has become a pivotal argument for success.

Medical universities nowadays are faced with drastic changes in their operating environment, such as the reorganization as corporations, the introduction of the new clinical training scheme, and the increase in student admission capacity.Physicians working for university hospitals bear the responsibility of providing highly advanced care while educating students and residents and conducting leading-edge studies. This places an excessive burden on them. Although the new clinical training scheme that started in 2004 has been fairly successful in guaranteeing the status of residents and enriching training programs, it practically lacks compensation for teaching physicians, and is considered to have caused a situation that is detrimental not only to teaching physicians and residents, but also to patients. As a local university, Fukushima Medical University also bears its share of the impact of such situation. It is feared that young and middle-ranking physicians may become exhausted and lose morale due to the increased burden on individual physicians. There is a deepening sense of crisis that the university hospital may not be able to continue its functioning as the core of medical services in the prefecture. The underlying problem of the short supply of physicians is increasingly expanding to other medical institutions in the prefecture, manifesting itself as a grave social problem affecting the entire prefecture.

Because of the high costs associated with new graduate nurse turnover, an academic-service partnership developed a nurse residency program that provides a comprehensive support system that spans 15 months. Now in its fourth year, involving more than 50 urban and rural hospitals of varying sizes and geographic locations, the program provides formalized preceptor training, monthly daylong educational sessions, and mentoring by clinical coaches. Key factors contributing to the success of this program are a dedicated, cohesive planning team of individuals who embrace a common agenda, stakeholder buy-in, appropriate allocation of resources, and clear articulation of measures of success, with associated data collection. Successful elements of the monthly educational sessions are the use of interactive teaching methods, inclusion of content tailored to the unique needs of the nurse residents, and storytelling to facilitate learning from practice. Finally, training to advance the skill development of preceptors, coaches, educators, and facilitators has provided organizations with enduring benefits.

Sternberg, Grigorenko, and Zhang (2008)have presented a creative model for the application ofresearch on intelligence and personality to education. There are many positive aspects of their effort. These in-clude the coordination of individual differences in cogni-tion and personality and their extension of the concept ofintelligence beyond skills that can be tested in the normaltesting paradigm. Although various parts of their ap-proach have appeared elsewhere, the development of asingle package containing all these ideas is a worthwhileimprovement in thinking about education. They cite nu-merous studies in support of their efforts. However, a closeexamination of some of the major studies shows that thisevidence, though not inconsistent with their claims, is notas strong as their review indicates. If one applies conven-tional psychometric criteria, simpler explanations thanthose they propose could be found. Their model of thinkingstyles is probably too complex for many practical appli-cations. However, a good case can be made that the ap-propriate criterion is "How useful will this approach be ineducation?" By this criterion, the total package is im-pressive and should be seriously considered by educators.

Background: Educational methods continue to evolve to meet the challenge of teaching undergraduate nursing students. Innovative teaching pedagogies require nursing students to be actively involved in their own learning compared with traditional didactical styles. Method: Students were exposed to three distinct teaching pedagogies: inquiry-based, online, and educator-led during their second year of study. Students' learning preferences were explored using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected using an online questionnaire, followed by a focus group interview. Results: The quantitative data revealed students preferred being taught directly from educators rather than through self-directed and online study. Manifest content analysis of qualitative data revealed four categories that supported student learning and five categories that hindered student learning. Conclusion: Students struggled when required to be self-directed in their learning. Students reported feeling uncertain and overwhelmed initially, which highlighted the importance of strong social and academic support to facilitate effective learning.

Preceptor education is vital to the success of healthcare institutions. Preceptors' roles are complex and require up-to-the-minute programs reflecting crucial mentoring responsibilities for orientees in multifaceted working environments. Finding the time to properly educate preceptors while maintaining quality bedside care is a challenge for staff development educators during the nursing shortage. Offering a preceptor education program online can assist preceptors in the adoption of role changes in a timely manner. The outcome can provide excellent, competent, caring preceptors. In this article, the course content and intended outcomes of online preceptor preparation programs are discussed. The role of the staff development educator in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating online preceptor programs is also discussed.

Background: To date, in-depth knowledge about how to structure guided self-study for the enhancement of the competencies of examination and treatment techniques in physiotherapy undergraduate students in the field of geriatrics, internal medicine and orthopedics is still lacking. For undergraduate physiotherapy students at Bern University of Applied Sciences-Health of Department a module on internal medicine and geriatrics as well as a module on orthopedics are scheduled in the third semester of the educational program. Objective: This pilot study will evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a guide self-study on examination and treatment competencies of undergraduate physiotherapy students in their third semester. Method: This study protocol describes a randomized-group controlled pilot educational study that will assess the feasibility and effectiveness of guided self-study units on the learning success of undergraduate physiotherapy students. Fifty physiotherapy students will be allocated into a guided self-study group (SG) or control group (CG). During the third semester, SG will receive three tutor supervised guided self-study sessions of 90min each. One week prior to the guided self-study session, the case and the learning goals will be provided to the students via the institutional electronic learning system. Students will prepare the cases in groups of five to six peers. The students will be guided by a tutor during this preparation time. The results of the group works will be presented and reflected during a moderated plenum session. The primary outcome will be the feasibility of implementing the guided self-study in the existing educational program including assessment of protocol adherence and evaluation of the quality of the proposed cases. The secondary outcomes will be the total score in the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) exams and written exams that demonstrate the learning success of the undergraduate physiotherapy students. Conclusion: This pilot study evaluates the feasibility and preliminary effects of implementing guided self-study units on active learning in bachelor's degree physiotherapy students.

Encouraging women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers is an important part of a skilled, diverse workforce. While women constitute nearly half of the U.S. workforce, they make up only one-third to one-fifth of the nation's STEM careers. The lack of women in science is a “hallmark characteristic of science and has persisted in spite of the rapid improvement of women's social and economic status over the past few decades.” One scientific discipline, however, has attracted an inordinate number of females: forensic science. In a survey of accredited forensic science educational programs, the percentage of females was 78% compared with, at most, a 35% average for non-forensic science freshmen. Why is forensic science so popular among females and, therefore, is it a gateway for women into STEM careers?
